Ever since I was a kid, I have been utterly fascinated by maps.  I could pore over them for hours, as I visualized the landscapes, the people, and the animals in all of those places with strange names.  Back then, it was merely a sheet of paper in a book or on the wall, covered with squiggly lines of various colors, yet still it was enough to fuel my imagination endlessly.

Now that we have Google Maps and such, we can take a virtual walk down almost any street in the world, with just a few mouse-clicks.  I often do this, and it's amazing, but still not nearly as good as being there.

That's why I still hit the road as often as possible.  I've road-tripped my way through every state in the USA and explored multiple destinations in most of them.  My van has 275,000 miles on it and is still going strong.

In September, I will be packing up my faithful Grand Voyager yet again for my next road trip.  I'll meander my way through the national parks of New Mexico and Texas on my way to Austin, the "live music capital of the world," where I will spend a week exploring some of their wonderful swimming pools, the Congress Avenue bridge bats, and of course the many music venues and unique urban quirks.  On the return journey I plan to hike and photograph the Palo Duro canyon in northern Texas.

As a long-time AAA member, it's been fantastic to have them ready to assist me when help is needed before the trip, and along the way.  I'm still amazed at what a bargain AAA membership is, and it's been worth every cent to have their membership card in my pocket for so many years.

AAA helped me plan my recent trip to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, where I spent over two weeks circling the islands by car, across the mountains and along the coasts, as I toured all of the major cities and natural areas.

Here are just a few of my photos from the beautiful Isla del Encanto, Puerto Rico:

Published Articles:

Listed below are scanned articles from a series of local business profiles that I wrote and photographed for the Colorado Daily newspaper in Boulder, Colorado.  I've also been published in Longmont Magazine, the Boulder Weekly, online at and elsewhere. My travel journals are bulging with stories from the road that I am organizing for publishing.

I have the original newsprint pages for all of these articles, and also high-resolution scans that are more readable.  Please contact me to see those.
